Google translate produces really odd translations sometimes... Yet the sentences don't look that complex to me. I think that if your main issue is kanji, you should use a kanji look-up by radicals and/or a kanji drawing recognizer. I use both depending on my needs and once you get either the kanji or the pronunciation, just use a jap-eng dictionary. Choose a dictionary that provides examples and locutions, whether paper or electronic or software or mobile app. Prefer a big paper one or a computer app for more efficiency and details when at home. From the sentences I can see, an beginner-intermediate level should be enough for the rest of the work, i.e. understanding the grammar (which is always the hardest to look up).
ReplyDeleteIf you don't have courses at school and can't afford to take some outside, try books (grammar such as Minna no Nihongo, listening books with a CD included), online websites dedicated to Japanese grammar, and other services providing other forms of training (if they require some fees, I recommend you the books first). After Minna no Nihongo II for beginners you get a good view of passive, causative and basic argumentation structure. At that point, you should be able to translate dialogues without searching many words. The narration is always more complex, so you'll need to get to the intermediary level eventually. Be patient, you will be surprised by what you can read and translate in a few years (I stopped fansubbing for 5 years and that is the effect it made on me). If you want to train aside academic courses, especially on things you like, I recommend you to focus on speaking, listening and writing. They are what will bother you the most if you work too "academically" and face "real-world" situations later.
Unfortunately, speaking is the hardest to train from your home. You can speak with your teacher, with online "language friends", but eventually you will have to go to Japan (except if you find an environment allowing you an unlimited training even if not in the country, what I could only do with English due to the language's notoriety, so far). However listening and repeating casual conversations should help a lot already.
Listening is easy if you get some CD and the script to check. It is often done by answering some questions about the text once listened. Remember, some locutions and way of speaking are hard to catch in anime. In real life it is even harder, except for academic presentations and other formal speeches.
Writing is hard again, not to write in itself but to find someone to correct you. The simplest is a Japanese teacher, again. You can write dialogues, stories, lyrics, reports. Dialogues and reports are easier to begin with.

That's very useful info thank you. You should go look at lines 1-87 that I've been working through. Google translate isn't ado good at the actual translating but recognising kanji is quite useful. I've learnt a few by translating the words so far. I have several books. I need to sit down with my Japanese for busy people book or my kanji book for that matter. Short sentences are okay, longer ones are driving me mental but I'm getting there. If you spot any sentences that are absolutely wrong let me know. I find this write therapeutic to be honest and it's way more Japanese than I've learnt in last 5 years. It's nice to get back to it.
